Think what you will about Elon Musk, but his vision is your better tomorrow. Committed inventors and entrepreneurs are driven by a narrative crafted by vision. The most successful businesses and corresponding narratives, however, are crafted their customer’s vision.

Such is Elon Musk. His vision is to:

“Crate stunning solar roofs with integrated battery storage, expand the electric vehicle product line to address all major segments, develop a self-driving capability that is 10x safe than manual and enable your car to make money for you when you aren’t using it.”

Notice that Musk’s focus is on a better tomorrow for all people. In place of growth, market-share, and even innovation is his focus on your world, bottom line, safety, and well-being.

Do not get me wrong, Musk is focused on innovation and market-share, but only if such attributes deliver his ultimate goal: a better you. They are secondary; or, perhaps, only a means.

If we were to ask you about your work, what would you say? You would probably tell us your title, job, and even a rundown of what such entails. I would bet that your answer would not be: “I create a better tomorrow for our clients.”

Elon Musk can teach us a lot about business and innovation. Most importantly, he can teach us how to focus our (profitable) company’s narrative on the right target to achieve the right goal.
